Within my seminar my tutor also raised another point about my work and the mode of presentation I am undertaking. The images I have been photographing are VISUAL RHYTHMS, they form almost linear beats and pulse with vertical lines. These rhythms overlap and distort however they are the steady hit of a bass drum not the flowing melody of a clarinet.
When you look at the image the sections create a sense of the eye being stopped and started. If there were no lines or overlapping you could read the image from left to right without any interruptions it would become a whole composite not a fragmented series of beats. The image above is probably one section of the film which finds a negotiation between the vertical and horizontal lines, the eye can read the flow of movement horizontally as well as vertically without them impending too much on one another. To compare this section however with the two below you begin to see how the vertical lines can cause a rupture in the horizontal rhythms of the photographs. This gives more emphasis to the work being read as beating fragments not a complete whole.
Within both of these images the structure of the fences is the main aspect which gives emphasis to the virtual lines. I think I need to try and make the change in surroundings more subtle.. perhaps considering THE FORM OF THE OLD FENCE when I PHOTOGRAPH A NEW ONE. Also
All of these separate aesthetics are not a problem when viewing the work as a print or just as the film itself. However I need to ask myself does my mode of presentation really relate to the experience of viewing what is in the image and the lines and rhythms they present to the viewer. As I have said earlier the images do not flow perfectly horizontally whereas I have worked at trying to build a projector that can move smoothly. I need to address the following questions:
WHERE DOES THE MOVEMENT OF THE PROJECTOR AND THE PERFORMANCE OF ME PHOTOGRAPHING TRULY CORRELATE?
DOES THE FILM WORK WELL WHEN BEING VIEWED WITH A SMOOTH ACTION?
DOES THE NATURE OF MOVING THE PROJECTOR CANCEL OUT THE CONCEPTS I HAVE FOLLOWED WHEN PHOTOGRAPHING THE SPACE?
to answer these questions, I could sit and write all day long, going back and forth however there is only one way I can see the answers... BY BUILDING THE REST OF MY INSTILLATION (if that's what is is)!
