a brief brief...

Create separate bodies of works that are coherent and explored. Create an output for these individual works that gives them a presence outside their 'photographic' beginning, become aware and develop a system of working which considers a cohesive output from its beginning to its end. Always keep in mind creating work for an audience when photographing/ creating books. Ask myself throughout the work how/what it is I want to be presented to all viewers and how I can communicate my concepts in an understandable and interesting way. This should give me an awareness into how I can make work which can exist in spheres of activity and presentation; the individuals photographs should become a part of a  whole which is directed and definite for viewers to enjoy.

evidence...

Evidence.
1977.
Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel.

a body of work which interests me because of its use of connecting images visually. However there is also an overall thematic condictioning to the images because they have all been selceted from institutes which regard them as photographs of 'Evidence". There is no text included in the work except this one word which resounds throughout... evidence, evidence, evidece... evidence for what? for whom? and of what? Sultan and Mandel have left us only photographs to answer these questions and this lack of context gives the images a new vitality. We dictate connotations of the word evidence and its relationship to the images however they also become stark and arresting curiositys because of there heavy visual styling and currating.

also accompanied by an exhibition at San Francisco MOMA

"Evidence is, as the artists stated back in the 1970s, ‘a poetic exploration upon the restructuring of imagery.’

"the work is decidedly not political; they merely structured the images based on loose visual symmetry and the effective self-contained interestingness of each image." LINK  by Daniel Shea

Photography of the Moment
by Ken Miller

"The photographers in SHOOT share a democratic,
freewheeling approach that reflects an era in which
we are increasingly bombarded by images and in which
we increasingly use ephemeral images to define our
OWN LIVES."

ARTISTS:

GLYNNIS McDARIS.. "ultimatly, I react to an energy or feeling"

"there's a sort of universal language of atmosphere, experience and memory"

JASON NOCITO: "I like insinuating things by putting images together that provoke a reaction..but a reaction that you shouldnt necessarily trust"

OLA RINDAL: "The change of distance, the volume and substance of the air, and the light all change the atmosphere and also my interest in the subject in front of me"
