evidence...

Evidence.
1977.
Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel.

a body of work which interests me because of its use of connecting images visually. However there is also an overall thematic condictioning to the images because they have all been selceted from institutes which regard them as photographs of 'Evidence". There is no text included in the work except this one word which resounds throughout... evidence, evidence, evidece... evidence for what? for whom? and of what? Sultan and Mandel have left us only photographs to answer these questions and this lack of context gives the images a new vitality. We dictate connotations of the word evidence and its relationship to the images however they also become stark and arresting curiositys because of there heavy visual styling and currating.

also accompanied by an exhibition at San Francisco MOMA

"Evidence is, as the artists stated back in the 1970s, ‘a poetic exploration upon the restructuring of imagery.’

"the work is decidedly not political; they merely structured the images based on loose visual symmetry and the effective self-contained interestingness of each image." LINK  by Daniel Shea
